Love it! Aug 31, 2008 Saw him in NY at a show my friend dragged me to and was instantly hooked. I took my boyfriend to his next NYC show and got him hooked. This album just confirms what amazing vocals Brendan has as well as his spectacular song writing abilities.
Nice but uninteresting music Aug 29, 2008 I found the music nice but uninteresting. It feels like he is on the way towards becoming a good singer song writer but is not quite there yet.

All I Can See Is I! Aug 28, 2008 Oh, man, I'm gonna get slammed for this one as I seem to be in the distinct minority here. But my fellow Amazoners, you like a dissident voice now and then, right? Oh man. Well here we go.
Ladies, you know that guy? That guy you meet at a party, and he's super cute, plus you heard he's that rarest of animals, a successful musician, and he seems so down-to-earth, plus did I mention he's cute? But after a few minutes of talking to him, you get this uh-oh feeling, which gets stronger as the minutes crawl by, and you begin planning your escape. He's not weird, it's just that ALL HE TALKS ABOUT IS HIMSELF. Brendan James is, musically, that guy.
This album is about Brendan James. All about him. His feelings. His childhood. His pain. His Mom. But only briefly then back to him. The first track, "Green" is the strongest, because James has honestly great piano skills, and Track Three, "Hero's Song" is a not-bad 60's style protest song (reminiscent of Tim Buckley). But the rest? The rest of the album blurs into one long bleakly murky muddy whine. Track Two, "All I Can See" has the word "I" or a form of it almost FORTY times. No need to mention the other tracks because they are all the same song.
The Amazon editorial review mentions James' cover of "Candle in the Wind". Why isn't that on here? And his duet with Carly Simon on "Let the River Run". Again, why why why? Anything to break the monotony.
So my message to James is as follows:
I am not a professional music reviewer.
My opinion appears to be in the minority.
You have every right not to care.
I know you will read this because this is your debut and I know you're going to read every last one of these Amazon reviews.
But I am the type of gal who buys this type of album when it's good. Not rips, BUYS. And this is what I suggest:
More duets. For the tracks you write, a subject other than you in a tempo other than glacial in a tone other than maudlin. And more piano interludes, a la Vanessa Carlton. Your piano-skills are exquisite, no need to hide them under a bushel of you.
Over and out!
GRADE: D
An impressive debut and welcomed change of pace for pop. Aug 21, 2008 I felt familiar with Brendan somehow. I later figured out that it was his song "Hero's War" that was the first of 30 tracks on Body of War: Songs That Inspired an Iraq War Veteran, that is also on this album. It's an impressive lineup of artists he joins that album.
At first listen, I did not not think he was American. His tone is European with an Irish feel, but could not put my finger on it. His writing is well rounded, educated, and worldly. Even the song "Manchester" I first assumed was England. But, no, I was way off. Not only is he American, but from New Hampshire, and the song "Manchester" is a city in NH where I actually went to school.
I am thrilled with the ongoing surge of acoustic rock and songwriter driving releases. Brendan is a welcomed addition to distract from the plethora of talentless hacks in the top 40. His songs are not hit bound, but the album is. The most pop-friendly of the lot would be "Green" and possibly "All I Can See". But like John Mayer, you can't really list many hit singles, but you most likely have one of his cds. So, the formula here for success is talent and content... which is rare.
He's young, a recent grad, and has a few life and love stories to tell. With such an impressive body of work and songwriting skills shown, we are bound to many years of following his life in song. He sounds great with a romantic tenor for the girls, but cool enough for the guys. The songs do flow together, but if it's a sound you like, it's a great way to start the day.
The harmonies of "Run Away" and catchy hook of "The Other Side" are examples of the great structure of the album.
A great find.
TERRIFIC! Aug 21, 2008 This is fast becoming one of my favorite CDs. Brendan James has a great voice, and yes, the quality of his voice does remind me a bit of James Taylor. But his lyrical, narrative song writing is what made me a fan -- he really speaks to me at this stage of my life. His music is soothing and calming, yet somehow energizing (not depressive). And the unplugged sound of the CD is perfect for repeated plays. Highly recommended.
