Freedom Sessions Sep 18, 2008 Just like every other Sarah McLachlan CD, Freedom Sessions is well worth your time and money.
A new twist on an old favorite Jun 11, 2008 The beautiful, ethereal songs or Sarah Mclachlan are expanded and stretched and molded beautifully into something out of the ordinary on these new versions of some of her best-known works. All the songs are done differently yet the essence remains. This is my favorite of her CDs.
Late night smoky jam session produces some interesting takes Mar 14, 2008 Sarah McLachlan recorded a late-night session at Pierre Marchand's studio that featured acoustic, stripped-down versions of favorites from Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, and the smoky, dark tracks bring an edge and bite not present on the sanitized studio versions of Elsewhere, Plenty, Mary, Good Enough, Hold On, Ice Cream, and Ice.
The driving, staccato guitar, bongos, and McLachlan's shuddering drawl on Elsewhere are more immediate and passionate than the studio counterpart. She starts out singing as though the melody is being drawn out of her seductively, almost erotic in its breathless, moaned intensity. Plenty opens with disturbing, disoriented echoes and is largely a capella for the first half. Mary largely retains its original sound from Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. Hold On is a simple, piano-driven melancholy. Ice is anchored by a front-and-center electric bass and distorted guitar wails. Ice Cream features a haunting two-part harmony with Sarah and Pierre Marchand. Sarah's cover of Tom Waits' Ol' 55 is pure magic.
A CD-ROM multimedia presentation is also included that features track-by-track audio samples from McLachlan's earlier albums Vox, Touch, and Solace, video clips, studio "home movies," concert footage and a travelogue of Sarah's trips to Cambodia and Thailand. However, as many fans criticized, this feels more like a "filler album" between Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing, but with some redeeming moments.
Life "Fumbling" -- truly great Jul 07, 2007 Sarah's vocal and acoustic clarity on this cd are wonderful and phenomenal.
I have all of her work, and this is a jewel in my collection.

strong and true Feb 14, 2007 Do not get me wrong. This entire album is golden. To hear Sarah's songs the way Sarah wanted to play them, or to just mess around with them, is a gift. But I have not nor will I ever get over this version of Hold On. I first heard it as a freshman in high school and I was practically unable to breathe after hearing it. It is so beautiful, so quietly heartwrenching, that I just sat in silence after it was done and wanted to cry.
This album is fantastic. Hold On is beyond words.
