A Unique Sonic Tapestry Feb 02, 2008 It's hard to describe Mew. The closest I can get is that they're a cross between early 70's Yes, Enya and Shudder to Think, with some late 80's alt-rock thrown in on top. One of the many categories they've been put under is "new prog," (Muse, Porcupine Tree) but those references don't do this CD much justice. You just have to hear it.
They do a nice job of creating sonic and dreamy landscapes while simultaneously creating some beautifully haunting melodies over shifting drum beats and edgy rhythms. There are times when I just cannot get the melodies out of my head - even the more odd ones. One day it's one song - the next day it's another. Every song has a unique fingerprint but they are all fantastic.
The only negative thing about this CD is that the rest of my collection has been woefully neglected! "Kites" is like a drug, where I need to get my fix everyday. If I don't... Oh well, the songs are stuck in my head anyway!
Definitely one of the most original sounding bands I've heard in the last several years. Highly recommended.

A band can do that? Dec 11, 2007 Two listens in, and I'm sold for life.
This is as close to genius as a band can reasonably be expected to get, this far into their careers. It merges prog-rock and alt-rock in a way that I'm not sure we've seen before. In two words, it soars.
Highly recommended in general, though in particular: if you enjoy Muse, Sigur Ros, or Blue October, I can pretty much guarantee that you will find more than a few songs here that work for you.

Stealthily Addictive Nov 04, 2007 Since I was introduced to the music of Mew a year ago, I have since acquired three of their CDs and have grown to like them quite well. Although their music is difficult to categorize, I can assure you that their sound is strangely uplifting and stealthily addictive. What sort of sound has this Danish combo wrought? Well, some may call it art-rock, others may call it alt-prog, and still others may just call it alternative rock. Whatever you call it, it is definitely both fresh and refreshing. The best way to put it if you are new to Mew is that if you like Arcade Fire, you will almost surely like these guys.
Nearly an hour of delightful music makes that hour pass quickly indeed. I deduct one star because there are no real highlights, I can't even pick any favorite songs! I like the whole CD, and if you like inventive melodies, solid instrumentation, and soaring vocals then you should like And The Glass Handed Kites as well!
