More like the wrong thing Mar 10, 2008 Southern rocker Bo Bice entered the big leagues upon finishing as runner-up on the fourth season of `American Idol,' but his debut does not measure up to expectations. Although he has the backing of music industry exec Clive Davis, his new image and sound are as transparent as half-empty glass of water.
Bice tries to pull off the pop-rocker profile on tracks like "U Make Me Better" and the Chad Kroeger-penned "You're Everything," but they fall flat despite the southern spin in Bice's vocals. Lead single and title track "The Real Thing" is melodically catchy but the lyrics are bland to the core. Similarly, the lyrics on "Lie...It's Alright" are almost laughable coming from Bice, as they would be more believable coming from someone like Kelly Clarkson or even Aaron Carter.
The fact that Bice collaborates with RCA's usual suspects - Kara DioGaurdi and John Shanks - is enough to raise suspect of the authenticity of his debut. Although he does shine on the closing song "Valley of Angels," it is most likely because Bice co-wrote it and therefore has at least some say in its existence. Bice also sounds more authentic on "Hold On to Me" and "Willing to Try," which reflect his Alabamian roots a bit better, but clunkers like the cliché "My World" and the up-tempo tune "Nothing Without You" show that pop, whether in ballad or rock form, mix as well with his genuine southern vocals just about as well as sushi mixes with butter.
Bo Bice is much, much better than this generic radio filler and will be able to show that `The Real Thing' is actually the wrong thing when he is given back control of his career.

Bo needs to find his place Nov 25, 2007 Just watched Blades of Glory and searched for more of Bo online. Listened to a few selections hoping to find his throaty bluesy Skynard voice and found a guy trying to emerge from the guitars screaming. The cut "Valley of Angels" is EXACTLY what he needs to concentrate on more. Natural talent in this area. Use it!! I too will wait for the next album where we hear the baritone give us his heart.
I listen to this CD EVERY day Jul 19, 2007 I LOVE Bo Bice, and I LOVE this CD. I have the title track on my MYSPACE page and everyone always tells me, "I love that song on your MySpace". His new CD debuts in Oct. 07.
Let him sing his own songs, record company! May 28, 2007 After listening to what Bo could do on "American Idol," especially the song he sung a capella, I decided to snatch up this album as soon as it hit the market. Egad! Where's the Bo I know?! I was certainly disappointed. After getting the album, I happened to watch an interview story where cameras followed Bo in the making of this thing. It was a terrible choice on the part of the studio/producer/record company/whoever's ultimate decision this was to not let Bo sing his own songs on this album. He's a great song-writer and can put his fantastic voice into his own songs with so much more heart than this album delivered. If you want just another album with so-so songs on it, go for it. If you want the real Bo, hope and pray that the undoubtedly stagnant sales from this album don't stop him from making a second album that demonstrates his true ability. I am not impressed with the square hole he got crammed into on this one.

Huge Disappointment May 16, 2007 Every song on this album was a huge disappointment. Each track sounded like so many other mediocre songs out there already. I thought Bo prided himself on being a little different during the competition, but this album was anything but. It was watered down even for watered down music.
