Description:

Since their formation, Chiodos have been focused on creating something different while letting their diverse influences shine through. Their resulting debut full length is only definable as a melting pot of electronic beats behind piano, metal guitar riffs and poppy melodic vocal lines that leave you humming. Heavy and harsh at one moment, beautiful and serene the next, seemingly as a rule staying away from 'verse-chorus-verse' song writing. Their debut EP was a raw effort of oddly pieced musical ideas and bedroom recordings, however it did not go unnoticed. Fans from their home state of Michigan and beyond buzzed about the release, along with praise of the band's explosive live performances. Leading to what would eventually become 7 full U.S. tours, thousands of CDs sold and countless enthusiastic fans. Influenced by Saves The Day, Queen, and At The Drive In, Chiodos create a sound both intense and versatile as they cross musical boundaries in every song. Chiodos is truly a beacon of light in a sea of music cluttered by cookie cutter mediocrity. You heard it here first.

Well, I picked up their newer album and foung it interesting. If you've read my review for that, you'll see "I should hate this but I don't." I believe I gave it three stars.

And so many of the reviewers for that album went on and on about how much better the first album (this one) was.

I disagree. Yeah, I gave it three stars but it's definitely a lesser three.

It lacks the complexity and blending of all the sounds that their newer material has. The keyboard work in this feels to me like it's taking a backseat in this one ... which is par for the course for most "heavy" guitar driven bands. What I heard on their newer material is a much more integrated sound where no one instrument stands out as king. It's a blended sound that takes some serious thought to put together. I found it more interesting than this one.

One thing both albums have in common is they're short. Short enough to make me angry.

... oh, and the guy sounds like a girl in this album too.

Fact of the matter is I bought this album because their other one intrigued me. I didn't LOVE it, but it was intersting enough for me to want to check out this one. BUT, had I bought THIS one first, I can all but guarantee I'd have never got the other.

4Pretty Good  Apr 07, 2007
This album is pretty good. Not amazing. Most of the songs are catchy, fun, and are good to sing along to.
But when it comes from All Nereids Beware...what? I downloaded the album before I bought it (as usual) and the version of All Nereids Beware I got was WAY better than the album version. On the album, it's way too slow, has quiet singing, bad sreaming, and wierd effects. I don't like it half as much as the one I downloaded/the one in the music video.

2Would be good, if they'd just shut up and play.   Apr 04, 2007
This cd would be more tollerable if they would shut up and just play the music. The music itself is pleasant to listen to. The beats are nice, the interludes of piano music are a dramatic touch --but then there's the "SINGING".

What most reviewers fail to mention is this: entire blocks of song are composed mostly of someone screaming into the mic. Badly. (No, this man doesnt not have a pair of Maynard James Keenan lungs.) Its a rare moment when our vocalist's pure tones can be heard (usually at that part of the song where the music dies down) and when they are, the moment is all-to-breif and soon to be followed either by more screaming or a girlish shriek.

If this type of music (with the annoying vomit-screaming) is not your style, this cd is NOT for you. If you're into that kind of thing, go for it.

5great band  Jan 23, 2007
The Chiodos are an up and coming post-hardcore band. You may like them if you also like A Static Lullaby, Atreyu, or Thursday. It's a great cd and I would also recommend seeing them live. They are touring now.

5Incredible  Jul 29, 2006
I've been on a constant high since the first time I heard Chiodos. I saw them live with Armor For Sleep back in February.

I had actually never even heard of Chiodos, so they were news to me. When they started playing, I was amazed. No one could talk to me the whole time they played. They were that good. So I picked up their CD that night, and I've been obsessed ever since then.

I've never been a huge post hardcore fan, but I am now. They've gotten me into other post hardcore groups now, although in my opinion they're the best.

Chiodos is my fav. band. I recommend their album over and over again.
