Great Album Jan 22, 2006 This CD was actually given to me from someone that had an abundance of CDs that were overflowing his case. I played it a couple of times and fell in love with it. I was living in Italy when I heard the song California, I always loved hearing it come on during the drunkin nights at the pool table. It was my 3-minute escape back to California.
Over the last couple of years I have made a transition from rap to alternative/rock, and CDs like this have helped me in doing so. I grew up listening to Northern California gangster rap and never had the influence of some good-listenin rock & roll. I listened to Pearl Jam and Soundgarden but that was the extent of it.
This CD is perfect in many ways. How the style of the singer blends with the melodies of each song is brilliant. I sometimes forget that "California" is even on the CD. We all wish for a CD that is going to be laced with nothing but great tracks and this is one of them. Not a fan of the last track, and "Anthem" is a little corny but still has a great sound to it. If you buy this listen to it all the way through, every song completely. Some will start out like duds and one is quick to hit next as I was, but give them a chance, those are the ones that will really catch your approval from the melody of the hooks. I haven't heard any of their other CDs, and I honestly don't think they will compare to this album but they will still be worth a try.

One Great Track Dec 13, 2005 It boggles my mind to see how many versions of Guest are available. I finally found the right one to review. Anway, on with the review. Besides the teen summer anthem "California" which you get sick of quickly, the fun but too-short Beatles-sounding "Hey Girl," and the very good "Always On My Mind," the only suberb track on this album is Track seven: "Turn, Smile, Shift, Repeat." The words, singing, and electronic mixing are musical genius.
Tracks three, four, and five, "Lonely Day," "One Ray of Sunlight," and "Anthem" are ultra-Disneyfied. Listening to these tracks, you feel as if you accidentally ingested too much sugar. With all that is going on in the world today, and the harder-edged, alternative groups that are popular today, how did Phantom Planet come up with such Pollyana lyrics in these three tracks?
If you pop this CD into your PC, you can access the "Hey Girl" music video, "California" with commentary, and Phantom Planet's website.

Great! Aug 28, 2004 This is unbelievably good. Phantom Planet is awesome! This is one of their best albums, too. I love all the tracks on here. Some of there songs are so upbeat and fun, but some of them are slower. I mean, I love like Pink Floyd and the Ramones and Black Sabbath and stuff, but this album totally caught my ear. It is great! It varies my music also. Variation can be good!

You gotta say Wow Jul 07, 2004 You gotta say "Wow"Wow, because I can't believe how many people think this is any good? I decided (because I was suspicious of my opinion) to wait for a few more cycles through the CD player before I wrote this. It's been over a month and probably ten complete cycles through... All I can say is: Over-rated! The singer is so over-the-top emotional on every track I'm exhausted by the third song. He needs to just relax a little bit, it's surely not life or death in pop music (is it?) I mean really, what is he 25 years old, for Gods sake, take a pill. The playing is tight and the band does nice stuff but it's also very "heard it before" for me, most of these songs, including the OC soundtrack "HIT" are kinda stereo typical of this genre today, radio rock. It's really not that good. Try Rooney or Myracle Brah or Owsley, right here on Amazon, same Genre much better music... Just my 2 cents: I give it 4 stars because otherwise Amazon hides it in 3 days...
