 Feel-Good Music Supreme Aug 08, 2007
I first heard and saw Marisa Monte on World Link TV a couple of years ago doing Agua de Marcos with David Byrne. I thought, who is this girl in sunglasses? Recently I saw Tribalistas videos of Carnavalia and Passe em Casa. Watching these people work together is pure joy. Look at the guys sunglasses! Special Guest Margareth Menezes, on Passe em Casa, has a lovely habit of singing with her arms outstretched. Watch Arnaldo Atunes playfully mock her singing style with his arms outstretched. Oops! I'm supposed be reviewing the CD. Well, their enjoyment of singing together comes through on the CD. Words in Portuguese and English, plus guitar chords! I already plan to sing Mary Cristo in church at Christmas.
I noticed how many reviewers said "I can't listen to anything else". This music makes me feel good. I'm considering buying several Tribalista CD's to give to musical friends who will appreciate this joyful sound. For the rest of you, Buy It.
The Soundtrack for Life's Beautiful Experiences May 17, 2007
This is an astonishingly impressive CD of popular Brazilian music, so full of life and joy! It's playful and uplifting while at the same time soulful and soothing. It is also one of my all-time favorite CDs. It is a one-time effort from 2003 of three friends and musical collaborators, Marisa Monte, Arnaldo Antunes and Carlinhos Brown.
Since a friend gave the CD to me a few weeks ago I find it impossible to stop listening to it (muchas gracias amigo mio). After countless listens, I constantly hear new things. It just draws you in, welcomes you to stay a while, to laugh and smile and to enjoy the moment. Each song is an incredibly well crafted piece of art.
The lyrics are pure evocative poetry and the beautiful acoustic arrangements (mainly piano and guitars) and vocal harmonies are so interesting. Thankfully, both the original Portuguese lyrics and English translations are included in the liner notes. And the singing in Portuguese is superb - the charming sounds of that language goes so well with the music. Marisa Monte's gorgeous and soaring vocals lead on most cuts. Arnaldo Antunes' deep voice grounds the songs with his warm and rich tones. Carlinhos Brown's voice is pure magic, as is his unique and fun percussion.
The songs are about love, life, friends and the best experiences of your life. The Tribalistas music is evocative of poignant and wonderful experiences. Whenever I listen to this CD I recall the best summer of my childhood - it just has that feeling. You may find yourself floating back to your fascination with your first love. Or maybe you'll remember that anticipation as a child of receiving presents on your birthday or Christmas. Perhaps you will remember a great road trip with your best friends. For me, this CD is the soundtrack for all those great experiences.

The disc was solid. Each track was different and the cd flowed well, was well organized etc. I first heard of the tribalistas when I was living in Cabo Verde and when I came back to Canada it was the first cd I bought- they're a great brazilian group and their tracks have become classics worldwide. Foi otimo!

I loved this CD so much when i was in Europe, and i still do now, being here in the States. i am so glad they have portugese AND english translations inside of the CD--the lyrics to Ja sei namorar are so powerful, so deep--knowing their meaning is essential to appreciating this powerful Brazilian pop.
