Description:

When major labels snatch indie acts, credit for having been there first holds little consolation for the original labels--unless, of course, there are easy bucks to be made from it. Suggesting Caroline's lack of faith in Ben Folds Fives' career longevity, the label trudged out its collection of early singles, live performances, album outtakes, and obscure covers at the first signs of the group's commercial breakthrough (rather than wait until these odds and ends were actually old enough to be of archival interest). Most of these "naked baby photos" are not worth your time, unless you're one of Ben's relatives. --Roni Sarig

5Ben Folds Five Delivers Again!  Aug 29, 2008
First of all, remember that it's hard to classify Ben Folds Five (BFF). To paraphrase Ben, his music with BFF is punk rock for sissies. His lyrics are storied, sarcastic and witty. The music is... well the music is just fantastic! Ben is a master on the piano who literally attacks the keys (catch him live and you'll figure out that I am speaking the truth - he's known to bash the keys with his piano stool). Sledge is descent enough on bass, and he's prone to making it a lead instrument to fill the space where a normal 6-string guitar might lie, using distortion and lead technique. Darren is a whiz on the drums and lays a great beat.

As far as this album goes, it is basically a collection of left-overs from recording the two previous albums as well as outtakes and live material. My personal favorites, well, I love the entire album. Standout tracks are, for me, "Eddie Walker","Philosophy", "Alice Childress", "Underground", and "Song for the Dumped". There are also some funny outtake tracks too, which are worth a listen if you want to get a feel for where BFF is coming from, but are more or less filler. Out of 16 total tracks, there are 11 that are keepers and 5 that are outtakes for the hard-core fan.

I hope you enjoy the album... if you like it, try to catch Ben Folds on tour. He's a blast to see live, and he performs his solo material as well as old BFF stuff too.

4This CD should be added toward the end of your Ben Folds Five catalog collection...  Jan 17, 2008
I like the songs on this CD but a good number of them are for the most part just raw earlier versions of tunes which were issued on the debut CD titled "Ben Folds Five" and/or "Whatever and Amen". I am pleased with the CD as It first exposed me to the tune "Eddie Walker" and that bent tune "For Those Of Ya'll Who Wear Fanny Packs"..this alone made it worth the purchase price but I would recommend purchasing it after one has already acquired some of the other CDs in either Ben Folds Five or Ben Folds Solo Catalog (with the exception of Fear of Pop which is really really bent! but good! but still bent!).

3For hard core fans only  Jan 23, 2007
This was the last Ben Folds album I need to finish my collection. It was worth the purchase but was not my favorite album. It shows how much the band and Ben has grown over the years. Good to have in a collection but not a must have.

4Truly for anyone  Feb 12, 2006
I have noticed many people here believe that if you are not already a big Ben Folds fan, then you will not enjoy this album. These people are fans, and probably were introduced to the studio albums first. Well, this was my first Ben Folds Five album. I recieved it when it was new and I was 10 years old. I loved it then and still do today. So, when I say that anyone, including children will enjoy this album, I truly mean it.

3quite good for what it is  Jan 10, 2006
this is a great example of how good a demo cd can actually be.

three reasons to buy this:

- best version of "underground" they put out. blows the studio version out of the water.
- BUILT TO SPILL COVER!!!!!! i never thought that i'd want to hear anyone cover built to spill, but man, bff does a fantastic job of it!
- this version of jackson cannery is pretty spectacular.

there is one huge downside of buying this though. after listening to it 3 or 4 times you're gonna get really bored with it.

i'm really waiting for ben folds to either put out a cd of built to spill covers or just tour with them. that would be truly incredible.
