Description:

A quick glance at the cover and inner-sleeve photos of Andy Griggs's debut album reveals this kid's most obvious selling point, aside from his light, twangily expressive baritone: an alluring Leonardo DiCaprio-Brad Pitt "look"--the stringy blonde hair, the fashionably stubbly beard. No doubt he'll make hearts throb in the teenage-female target group that the Nashville record hucksters seem to be lusting after these days. Griggs has a serious weakness for generic-sounding country-pop ballads. Yet the 26-year-old Louisiana-born singer delivers some impressive country grit and soul on gutsier songs like "Waitin' On Sundown," "A Side of Me," and the anguished "Ain't Done Nothin' Wrong"--one of four songs that Griggs cowrote. And he really rips things up on his spirited, worthy reprise of the Rodney Crowell classic "Ain't Livin' Long Like This." It just goes to show that you can't always judge a book (or a country CD) by its pretty-boy cover. --Bob Allen

5Awesome  Mar 16, 2006
After seeing Andy in concert with Blake Shelton and Tracy Byrd, I had a hard time finding any of his CD's locally. Amazon.com came through for me and I found 3 fantastic CD's. Andy's got such a wonderful voice. I play his songs over and over and I never get tired of hearing him sing.

5Everybody Needs To Own This Album  Aug 15, 2004
Andy is soooooooooooo underated as a singer.Ive seen him twice in concert and his live performances dont let you down either. When i first got this cd i couldnt stop listening to it.It was that good. His voice really got to me.He has a country with a little rock edge in his music, which it makes it very likeable to many fans of both genre."Waitin On Sundown" is my favorite here. Each song sounds like it could have been a hit.I got to meet him at my first concert and he signed my cd cover.A really cool guy too.

5Amazing debut...an instant classic  Oct 01, 2003
It is a rare thing indeed to hear a debut as confident as this one from Andy Griggs...rarer still to discover a debut that is this flawless. But Griggs delivers an instant classic with YOU WON'T EVER BE LONELY, as fine a country music collection as has been released within the past decade. As soon as he opens his mouth, the listener knows instantly that Griggs is old-school country, possessing a strong a set of pipes that are capable of honky-tonk rave-ups and tender ballads alike...growling one moment, laughing the next, and evoking a tear the next. Take equal parts Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and Travis Tritt...shake, rattle, and roll thoroughly...and you might have a voice similar to that of Andy Griggs. But a great voice alone does not a great album make...on this CD, Andy also has an unerring, uncanny knack for song selection, mixing his own superb material with impeccable choices from other songwriters. The production, instrumentation, and arrangements are all perfectly paced throughout as well. Every note, sung or played, tells a story. Now, onto the songs: "You Made Me That Way" is a superb lead-off; instantly "hum-able", but not overly manufactured. Then, Andy steps up to the plate with one of his own songs, "I'll Go Crazy" which displays Andy's voice in fine form as he delivers the devastating lines: "I'll go quietly, I'll go silently, but I'll crazy without you" accompanied by a killer melody that insistently works its way inside your brain. On the next track, Andy pulls out the stops vocally with the poignant look back at teen love in "I Miss You the Most." Critics and fans alike have recognized the title track, "You Won't Ever Be Lonely," as simply one of the finest country music songs ever written or recorded...and that's not hyperbole. Andy Griggs and Brett Jones hit a grand slam with this one, which topped the charts and remains a classic to this day...a beautiful ballad without an ounce of fluff or sap, but a perfectly delivered, heartfelt masterpiece. So, after such a high point, there must be an inevitable letdown, right? Wrong! With "Waitin' on Sundown," Andy tackles the challenging subject of domestic violence in his inimitable gritty-yet-sensitive manner...rather than casting a dark cloud over the album, it's a song of hope and redemption. Griggs' own "A Side of Me" packs a wallop and another well-timed punch line. "I Don't Know a Thing" is a rather subtle tale that sneaks up on you; well-written by Tim Johnson and Kelly Cole, and delivered with perfectly-pitched passion by Andy. I have to say that the next song is my favorite: "Shine On Me" is a duet with Waylon Jennings that is especially poignant in light of Waylon's passing. This love song has a bit of a Gospel feel...both singers soar together soulfully in a way that is as bracing as hot cup of coffee on a cold early morning. On "Ain't Done Nothin' Wrong," Griggs manages to weave a compelling morality tale without being preachy. But, the hit parade doesn't end yet...Andy offers "She's More," which is sweet without being syrupy, and immediately shot to the top of the music charts on the basis of its timeless theme and Andy's excellent interpretation. Andy could have stopped there and still would have had a superb album. But, for the closer, he decided to kick out the jams with the often-covered Rodney Crowell chestnut, "Ain't Livin' Long Like This." If you ever wanted to know what a grin sounded like, play this song...Andy not only has a blast with it, but as many times as the song has been recorded by others, Andy Griggs takes it by the scruff of the neck and makes it his own. Crank your radio up to "10," roll down your windows, check your radar detector, pull into the passing lane, and sing along with Andy Griggs! "Check this out," indeed.

4Wondeful Debut  Mar 09, 2003
I remember buying this album when it was released in 1999. Wow, that was a long time ago! I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the songs - and they still hold up today, in my opinion. It is a CD that I didn't regret buying on the strength of a few songs. I lost interest in Andy Griggs later, his music didn't have that appeal anymore, from what I could hear on radio. But his debut blew me away.

I think it's because most of the songs are not all that conventional-sounding. There are some that sound "pop", but there are more that have an edgier, rock-ish influence. I can't really describe it well. But the songs are great. "A Side of Me" and "Ain't Done Nothin' Wrong" are examples of this edgy sound. I love these two. Also, Andy has a very soulful, Southern voice. It's nice to listen to.

If you liked the sound of the singles(the title track, She's More, You Made Me That Way), I think you'll be pleasantly surprised that the album as a whole is wonderful and each song is enjoyable.

I recommend it!
